A powerful earthquake shook northern Venezuela this week, damaging buildings, toppling church structures, and sending thousands of frightened residents into the streets during annual religious celebrations taking place across parts of the country.
The earthquake, which measured approximately 6.5 in magnitude, struck near Venezuela’s Caribbean coast and was felt across multiple regions. Officials reported structural damage to homes, businesses, and churches as emergency crews inspected affected communities. Authorities reported no widespread fatalities from the initial quake, but crews continue assessing damage and monitoring aftershocks.
The earthquake occurred during the annual Festival of San Juan, celebrated throughout coastal regions of Venezuela. While many participants observe the festival as a cultural tradition honoring John the Baptist, some celebrations also blend Catholic traditions with Afro-Caribbean religious practices associated with Santería, including the veneration of deities such as Ochún and Ogún.
Many evangelical Christians expressed deep concern over those practices, pointing to Scripture’s clear warnings against idolatry, spiritism, and occult worship.
A Nation Searching for Hope
For years, Venezuela has endured economic collapse, political turmoil, widespread poverty, and one of the largest migration crises in modern history. Millions have fled the nation while those who remain continue struggling with shortages, inflation, and instability.
Now another tragedy has shaken the country.
As images of damaged churches and terrified families spread across social media, Christians around the world immediately called the nation to repentance and prayer.
The earthquake also struck near Yaracuy State, home to Sorte Mountain, the center of the María Lionza cult. For decades, the mountain has attracted followers who practice spiritism, Santería, occult rituals, and religious syncretism. Scripture clearly condemns these practices as works of darkness that lead people away from the one true God.
For many believers, the timing of these events has become impossible to ignore.
A Call to Repentance
The timing of the earthquake has caused many Christians to reflect on Scripture’s repeated warnings against idolatry and false worship. The Bible records numerous occasions when God judged nations that rejected Him and embraced false gods. Whether this earthquake serves as divine judgment or a divine warning, it stands as a sobering reminder that every nation is accountable to Almighty God.
Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly confronted nations that exchanged His truth for idols and false religion. He called them to repent before judgment came.
Today, many societies continue to reject God’s Word while embracing spiritual deception, occult practices, and religions that deny Jesus Christ. Venezuela serves as a powerful reminder that a nation can never find lasting peace apart from the Lord.
Rather than ignoring the spiritual lessons that emerge during moments like these, Christians should boldly proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Every tragedy reminds us that life is fragile, eternity is real, and salvation is found only in Christ.
A Biblical Perspective
God has never been silent about idolatry.
“There shall not be found among you any one that… useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.” (Deuteronomy 18:10 KJV)
The Lord also calls nations to humble themselves and return to Him.
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14 KJV)
The Bible teaches that God alone deserves worship. Every false religion, every idol, and every occult practice ultimately leads people away from the truth found only in Jesus Christ.
Where We Stand
The earthquake in Venezuela should cause every believer to examine the spiritual condition of our own nation.
Scripture repeatedly warns that God will not share His glory with idols. Throughout history, nations that embraced false worship eventually faced His correction. Whether this earthquake represents divine judgment or a divine warning, it reminds us that no nation can prosper while rejecting the Lord.
America should pay attention.
Our culture continues to normalize witchcraft, occultism, pagan spirituality, and every form of false religion. The answer is not fear—it is repentance. Revival begins when people humble themselves before God, reject spiritual deception, and return to His Word.
Pray for the people of Venezuela, pray that churches will boldly preach Jesus Christ, that those trapped in spiritism, Santería, and false religion will encounter the saving power of the Gospel, and that nationwide revival will sweep across the land.
