Marco Rubio Invokes Christendom and Calls for Western Revival in Powerful Speech Beneath the Acropolis

ATHENS — Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a sweeping defense of Western civilization Wednesday, standing beneath the Acropolis and calling on Europe and America to rediscover the cultural inheritance that shaped the Western world.

Speaking from the ancient Pnyx with the Parthenon towering behind him, Rubio traced Western civilization from ancient Greece through Rome, European Christianity and eventually the United States.

His message centered on a simple warning: the West cannot preserve its future if it becomes ashamed of its past.

Rubio argued that ancient Greek civilization established a belief in rational order that became foundational to Western mathematics, science, medicine, philosophy, ethics and religion.

Then he directly connected that inheritance to Christianity.

Rubio said the intellectual foundation established in the ancient world helped the Gospel of Jesus Christ find “fertile soil in Europe” and eventually flourish into Christendom.

“Too Often These Days, We Build Downwards”

One of Rubio’s strongest moments came as he contrasted ancient aspirations toward excellence with modern Western culture.

“Too often these days, we build downwards,” Rubio said.

He argued that modern societies increasingly design standards around avoiding failure rather than encouraging people to pursue excellence.

Then Rubio pointed toward one of history’s most recognizable monuments.

“The men who made the Parthenon, they built upwards,” he said.

Rubio argued that the ancient Greeks pursued excellence in philosophy, art, athletics, architecture, politics and warfare.

He said their descendants eventually developed a shared understanding of “virtue,” “truth, goodness, and beauty” and objective standards concerning how people should live.

From Ancient Greece to Christian Europe and America

Rubio’s speech went beyond praising ancient Greece.

He described a historical progression from Athens and Rome into European Christendom and ultimately America.

Rubio referenced Christian thinkers Augustine and Aquinas and the development of natural law. He also pointed toward Europe’s great cathedrals, scientific discoveries and exploration before connecting that inheritance to America’s frontier spirit and technological achievements.

The Secretary of State argued that this shared civilization remains important to the alliance between Europe and the United States.

His remarks came during a visit focused on American cooperation with Greece involving defense, energy and regional security.

A Biblical Perspective

Scripture repeatedly calls believers to pursue what is true and excellent.

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report… think on these things.” Philippians 4:8 KJV

Civilizations ultimately reflect what their people value.

Buildings may survive centuries, but faith, truth and moral conviction must be taught from generation to generation.

Where We Stand

At Political Pulpit, we believe Christians should understand the spiritual and historical foundations that helped shape the Western world.

Rubio’s speech raises a question larger than any political administration: What principles should Western civilization preserve for future generations?

Christians should examine that question through Scripture, history and truth.

Political movements come and go. Nations rise and fall. But God’s Word remains.

We should build upward by pursuing truth, courage, excellence and righteousness while remembering that no civilization or government can replace our ultimate allegiance to God.
