The confrontation between the United States and Iran is entering another dangerous phase as American military strikes, Iranian retaliation, economic warfare and threats against the U.S. homeland unfold at the same time.
During the latest Political Pulpit broadcast, we examined how a conflict once centered thousands of miles away now touches everything from American military readiness to oil prices and cybersecurity.
U.S. Central Command confirmed American forces launched another major wave of strikes against Iranian military targets on September 1.
The operation targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps air defenses, radar systems, maritime assets, communications facilities and mine laying capabilities.
President Trump has warned that additional strikes remain possible.
More than 50,000 American service members are currently operating across the Middle East.
Iran Refuses to Back Down
Iran has continued retaliating.
Missiles and drones have been launched toward locations across the Gulf, including Kuwait, while Tehran continues threatening American interests.
The question now is how long this cycle can continue.
Vice President JD Vance has rejected setting a public timeline for American military operations, arguing that Washington cannot announce its strategy to Iran while attacks against commercial shipping continue.
Trump has also argued that Iran’s military capabilities have been severely degraded.
However, Tehran has demonstrated that it retains the ability to retaliate.
Strait of Hormuz Becomes Center of the Conflict
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most important battlefields.
The narrow waterway connects Persian Gulf energy producers with global markets and normally carries enormous quantities of oil.
American forces are working to protect commercial shipping while targeting Iranian capabilities that Washington says threaten vessels traveling through the region.
Trump says the United States has gained substantial control over the Strait.
However, commercial traffic remains far below levels seen before the conflict.
South Korea is now considering ways it could contribute to efforts protecting freedom of navigation, although Seoul says no military deployment has been approved.
That shows how quickly the conflict could begin involving additional American allies.
Questions Grow About America’s Weapons Stockpile
The war is also raising questions about American military readiness.
Reports have warned that months of operations have placed pressure on certain U.S. missile and interceptor inventories.
Trump strongly disputes suggestions that America is running dangerously low on ammunition.
He says the United States possesses substantial supplies while rapidly increasing production and stockpiling weapons for future threats.
The issue matters beyond Iran.
America must maintain enough military capability to deter other potential adversaries while simultaneously supporting allies and protecting U.S. forces around the world.
Iran Threatens the American Homeland
The battlefield is not limited to the Middle East.
Iran linked cyber actors have threatened America’s energy, water and telecommunications infrastructure.
One group recently warned that the United States could experience “unexpected and critical events” involving those industries.
American cybersecurity officials have already warned utilities about attacks against internet connected industrial equipment.
More than 100 systems in the American water sector were targeted during a recent cyber campaign.
Federal authorities have not publicly attributed every one of those incidents to Iran, but Iranian affiliated cyber operations against American infrastructure remain a documented national security concern.
This is twenty first century warfare.
A foreign adversary does not necessarily need missiles capable of reaching American cities if hackers can attack infrastructure remotely.
Washington Turns to Economic Warfare
The Trump administration is also attempting to weaken Tehran without relying solely on military force.
Operation Economic Outcast seeks to sever Iran’s remaining international financial connections.
Treasury expanded that campaign again Friday by sanctioning a Turkish financial institution that the U.S. government accuses of providing Iran with access to international banking and facilitating transactions connected to the IRGC Quds Force.
The administration hopes military pressure, financial isolation and restrictions on Iranian oil revenue will eventually force Tehran to change course.
So far, Iran has not surrendered its position.
Could This Become a Larger War?
That remains the most important question.
The conflict now includes American military strikes, Iranian missile and drone retaliation, disrupted commercial shipping, economic warfare, cyber threats and discussions among American allies about becoming more involved around Hormuz.
None of that proves a wider regional or global war is inevitable.
But every additional country, missile strike and retaliatory operation increases the possibility of miscalculation.
The conflict could end through deterrence or negotiations.
It could also continue for months.
A Biblical Perspective
Scripture reminds us that nations must seek wisdom during times of conflict.
“Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.” (Proverbs 20:18 KJV)
America must remain strong, but strength should always be accompanied by wisdom.
Christians should pray for America’s service members while also praying for innocent civilians who become trapped in war.
Where We Stand
America has a responsibility to protect its military personnel, defend the homeland and secure vital infrastructure.
That includes ships traveling through international waterways and Americans depending upon water, electricity and communications systems here at home.
At the same time, Americans deserve accurate information about where this conflict is heading.
The Iranian government remains under enormous military and economic pressure, but it has not stopped fighting.
That means America must remain vigilant.
We should strengthen our military readiness, protect our critical infrastructure and pray that our leaders make decisions that defend America without allowing this conflict to expand unnecessarily.
Political Pulpit will continue watching the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian retaliation, American military operations and threats against the homeland.
Pray for America’s troops.
Pray for wisdom for President Trump and America’s military leaders.
Pray for the protection of innocent lives.
And pray that this conflict ends before an already dangerous war becomes something much larger.
