President Donald Trump is moving to give American farmers and ranchers greater power to process their own meat, taking direct aim at an industry dominated by four major processing companies.
Trump announced the move Friday, saying he has authorized legal documents to be drafted that would reduce barriers preventing producers from processing and selling more of their own products.
“For years I have heard that they have had a tremendous problem with the Big Processors, who many say are a nasty Monopoly,” Trump wrote.
“There are, essentially, 4 of them, a very non competitive number, and they make life miserable for our wonderful Farmers and Ranchers.”
Trump then announced his proposed solution.
“In order to break this powerful monopoly… I am authorizing legal documents to be drawn in order to allow Farmers and Ranchers to be given the right to PROCESS THEIR OWN FOOD.”
“This should move quickly,” Trump added.
Four Companies Dominate Beef Processing
Trump’s criticism targets one of the biggest concerns facing independent cattle producers: consolidation within America’s meatpacking industry.
Four companies, Cargill, Tyson Foods, JBS USA and National Beef, control approximately 85 percent of U.S. beef processing.
That concentration has fueled years of complaints from ranchers who argue that too few processors hold too much power over the prices producers receive for their cattle.
The Justice Department is already investigating whether major meatpacking companies have engaged in anticompetitive practices that contributed to higher beef prices.
Trump’s new initiative could give smaller producers another path to market while increasing competition throughout America’s food supply chain.
Rollins Says Changes Are Coming
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins quickly backed Trump’s announcement, saying the administration plans to remove regulatory barriers surrounding meat processing.
Rollins indicated that major announcements could come as early as next week, including efforts to help ranchers process their own beef and sell products across state lines.
Exactly how far the administration can go through executive and regulatory action remains uncertain. Federal law currently requires USDA inspection for most meat sold commercially across state lines, and some lawmakers argue that Congress must ultimately change those requirements.
The announcement also comes as Americans continue dealing with historically high beef prices and the nation’s cattle inventory remains near its lowest level in decades.
Putting American Producers First
For generations, America’s farmers and ranchers have fed this nation.
Yet independent producers increasingly operate between rising expenses and a highly concentrated processing industry.
If Trump’s plan succeeds, smaller producers could gain more control over how their animals move from pasture to American dinner tables.
Greater competition could also challenge the enormous influence of multinational processors while strengthening local and regional food systems.

Farmers and ranchers who work the land, raise livestock, and feed their neighbors deserve an honest opportunity to prosper from their labor.
