President Donald Trump is intensifying economic pressure on Iran as Washington seeks to squeeze Tehran’s ability to finance military operations, sell energy, and maintain access to the international financial system.
The Trump administration has increasingly combined military pressure with sanctions, financial restrictions, and pressure on Iran’s international trading networks.
The U.S. Treasury recently launched “Operation Economic Outcast,” a campaign designed to sever financial connections that help sustain the Iranian government.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the strategy targets the financial lifelines Tehran uses to remain connected to the outside world.
The pressure reaches beyond Iran itself. Washington is also targeting companies, financial networks, vessels, and intermediaries accused of helping Tehran move money, sell petroleum, and evade American sanctions.
Iran’s Financial Networks Under Attack
Washington has targeted Iran’s ability to access foreign currency and move money internationally.
Treasury officials have announced sanctions against networks accused of moving hundreds of millions of dollars through Iran’s shadow banking system.
The administration has also targeted cryptocurrency networks that American officials say have helped Iranian entities move billions of dollars and provided financial support to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Iran’s oil industry remains another major target.
American sanctions have hit shipping networks, companies, individuals, and vessels accused of helping Tehran transport petroleum around existing restrictions.
The goal is clear: reduce the money available to the Iranian government while increasing pressure on Tehran to change course.
Iran’s Energy Infrastructure Already Took Major Damage
The financial squeeze comes after months of U.S. and Israeli military operations inflicted significant damage on Iranian energy infrastructure, adding another layer to Tehran’s economic problems.
Iran acknowledged this week that only about 40 percent of damaged capacity at the massive South Pars gas field had returned to production. South Pars, which Iran shares with Qatar, is the world’s largest natural gas field and plays a critical role in Iran’s energy economy.
Iran’s oil minister has also acknowledged declining oil sales, although Tehran maintains that it continues supplying customers outside the region.
Inside Iran, fuel problems are becoming increasingly visible.
Reports have described gasoline shortages, long lines, and disruptions at filling stations. Iran already struggled to refine enough gasoline to satisfy domestic demand before the current crisis.
Now damaged energy infrastructure, sanctions, disrupted trade routes, and restrictions on Iran’s international financial networks are converging.
Washington is attacking Tehran’s ability to move money and sell energy internationally, while previous American and Israeli strikes damaged physical infrastructure Iran needs to sustain energy production.
Strait of Hormuz Remains Critical
The Strait of Hormuz remains at the center of efforts to resolve the crisis.
The strategic waterway represents one of the world’s most important energy corridors. Disruptions there can affect oil markets, shipping costs, and economies far beyond the Middle East.
Diplomatic efforts continue over restoring normal shipping while Iran seeks sanctions relief and other concessions from Washington.
Trump, however, has shown little appetite for rewarding Tehran without substantial changes in Iranian behavior.
A Biblical Perspective
Scripture reminds us that nations and rulers remain accountable to Almighty God.
“For the kingdom is the LORD’S: and he is the governor among the nations.” (Psalm 22:28 KJV)
Christians should pray for wisdom among America’s leaders as they confront hostile governments while remembering innocent people who suffer during war.
Strength and wisdom must work together.
Where We Stand
America must confront threats against our nation, our military, and our allies from a position of strength.
Iran’s government has spent decades supporting armed groups across the Middle East and threatening Israel and American interests. Cutting financial resources that enable those activities can place tremendous pressure on Tehran without automatically requiring a wider ground war.
The United States and Israel have already demonstrated substantial military capability. Now Washington’s economic campaign seeks to tighten the pressure even further.
At the same time, we should distinguish between Iran’s government and ordinary Iranian citizens. They should hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ and experience freedom rather than suffer under oppressive leadership and endless conflict.
Pray for President Trump and America’s military leaders. Pray for Israel. Pray for innocent people throughout the region. Pray that God grants our leaders wisdom, protects American service members, restrains evil, and opens the door to lasting peace.
