WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced Friday that CNN, MS NOW and Politico are banned from the White House effective immediately, dramatically escalating his long running confrontation with major news organizations.
Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, accusing the three organizations of repeatedly reporting what he described as “fake news.”
He also warned that the list may grow.
“Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow,” Trump wrote.
The announcement immediately raised questions about exactly how broadly the restriction will operate, including whether reporters from the organizations will lose White House credentials or access to briefings, presidential events and the White House press pool.
Trump Accuses Outlets of Reporting “Fiction and Lies”
Trump said he believes news organizations should face consequences when he believes their reporting about his administration is false.
“Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America,” Trump wrote.
The president did not identify specific CNN, MS NOW or Politico reports that prompted Friday’s action.
The three organizations had not immediately responded to Reuters requests for comment following Trump’s announcement.
White House Press Access Battle Escalates
This is not the first confrontation between the Trump administration and major news organizations over access.
The administration previously restricted the Associated Press from certain presidential events following a dispute over the organization’s continued use of the name Gulf of Mexico rather than Gulf of America.
Trump has also repeatedly criticized television networks, newspapers and individual journalists whose coverage he considers inaccurate or unfair.
The latest decision goes significantly further by naming three major organizations at once.
The move could also generate legal challenges centered on the First Amendment and the government’s ability to restrict journalists from presidential access based on their reporting.
More Media Outlets Could Face Restrictions
Trump’s final warning may become the biggest part of the story.
He explicitly said additional organizations could follow CNN, MS NOW and Politico.
Exactly which outlets he intends to target remains unknown.
The administration also had not immediately released detailed criteria explaining what reporting could result in an organization losing White House access.
That makes Friday’s announcement only the beginning of a potentially larger battle between the presidency and the American press.
