Rubio Demands Answers From Russia Over Suspected Plague Lab Incident: U.S. Watching “Hour by Hour”

REYKJAVIK — Secretary of State Marco Rubio is calling on Russia to provide greater transparency surrounding the mysterious death of a laboratory worker at a Siberian research institute that studies plague and other dangerous infectious diseases.

Speaking Tuesday during a news conference in Iceland, Rubio confirmed that American officials are closely monitoring the developing situation.

“Anytime you hear that there’s some disease that infected someone in a lab anywhere in the world, you’re going to be concerned about it,” Rubio said.

However, Rubio cautioned against jumping to conclusions.

“It would be irresponsible for me here to sit and speculate because we just don’t have all the information yet,” he said.

Rubio added that Russia should provide additional information to the international community, saying the United States is watching developments “very closely” and “hour by hour.”

Lab Worker’s Death Sparks International Concern

The concern centers on the death of a worker at the Irkutsk Anti Plague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East.

Russian and international reports have identified the worker as 28 year old Daria Shipilova.

Independent Russian media reported that Shipilova may have been exposed to bacteria associated with pneumonic plague after a laboratory accident. Russian authorities have not publicly confirmed that account, and the exact cause of her death remains under investigation.

Authorities placed people who may have had contact with the worker under medical observation and introduced precautionary measures at several health facilities.

Russia Says No Plague Cases Confirmed

Russia provided the World Health Organization with an important update Tuesday.

Russian authorities told the WHO that no plague cases had been recorded in Irkutsk and said testing of people who had contact with the deceased worker came back negative for dangerous infectious pathogens.

The WHO has said the risk to the general population currently appears low.

Those findings provide reassurance, but American officials say they still want additional information.

Rubio said greater transparency would help governments determine whether any further response is necessary.

“Maybe there’s nothing there. Maybe it’s bigger than we thought. We don’t know,” Rubio said.

U.S. Government Monitoring Situation

The CDC, State Department and other federal agencies have been working to gather information about the incident.

President Donald Trump has also said the United States is prepared to assist Russia if necessary.

For now, there is no evidence of a widespread plague outbreak or an immediate threat to Americans.

A Biblical Perspective

Scripture reminds us that wisdom requires careful examination rather than fear.

“The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.” Proverbs 14:15 KJV

That principle matters during uncertain public health situations when rumors can spread faster than verified information.

Where We Stand

Transparency matters when dangerous pathogens and laboratory incidents are involved.

Russia should provide international health authorities with enough verified information to understand what happened and determine whether any broader danger exists.

At the same time, concern should not become panic.

The available evidence currently does not establish a widespread plague outbreak. Americans should follow verified information as health officials investigate.

We should pray for the family of the deceased worker, for medical personnel and for wisdom among officials responsible for protecting public health.
