Eph. 5:22-23
Our society constantly bombards us with messages that define family and diminish its importance. But the Bible speaks clearly about God’s plan and intention for families.
In Ephesians 5:22-23, the Apostle Paul outlines the roles and responsibilities within a family structure. Wives are to submit to their husbands as the church submits to Christ (Eph. 5:22). Husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her (Eph. 5:25).
God created Adam and Eve and placed them in the Garden of Eden (Gen. 2:8). He intended for them to have fellowship with each other and, most importantly, with Him (Gen. 3:8). The family unit is the foundation of society (Prov. 22:6). Strong families with the grace of God over their lives lead communities and a strong nation.
Secular society throws many challenges at families today. Society tries to redefine what constitutes a family. But God’s word is clear on what a family is – a husband who loves and fears the Lord, a wife who loves and fears the Lord, and together they love their children.
Other challenges include:
- Busyness: In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to neglect our families. We prioritize work, social media, and other activities over spending quality time with our loved ones.
- Communication breakdowns: Poor communication can lead to misunderstandings, resentment, and conflict.
- Financial stress: Financial strain can put a lot of pressure on families.
- External temptations: The world is full of temptations that can lead to adultery, pornography, and other destructive behavior that brings great consequences ultimately affecting the family as a whole.
Overcoming the Challenges
Despite the challenges, we are called to fight for our families. Here are some ways we can do that:
- Prioritize God in your life and the family: Seek God’s guidance, pray together as a family, create your family home Bible study, create an atmosphere where your children can ask you biblical questions and provide the answers they are searching for.
- Prioritize your family: Make time for regular meals together, family nights, and vacations.
- Communicate openly and honestly: Share your feelings and needs with each other. Listen to each other without judgment.
- Work together as a team: Support each other through thick and thin. Share household responsibilities.
God designed the family unit to be a place of peace and love, support, and growth. By following God’s will for our families, we can build strong families that will have a positive impact on our communities and the world.
