Another historic Christian building has been devastated by fire, raising fresh concern among believers as Americans watch reports of churches damaged or destroyed across the country.
Fire erupted shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday at a historic building owned by LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the basement. Crews launched an aggressive interior attack, but flames had already traveled through walls and hidden spaces throughout the aging structure.
The fire eventually caused portions of the roof and floor to collapse.
Four firefighters suffered injuries while battling the blaze, including two struck by falling bricks.
The building dates to the 1890s and formerly housed a Seventh-day Adventist congregation. LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church later acquired the property and planned to renovate it into a respite housing center for people experiencing housing instability.
Importantly, the neighboring main LaGrave sanctuary survived the fire.
Investigators Have Not Determined the Cause
As investigators examine the destruction, authorities have not announced what started the fire.
That distinction matters.
There is currently no confirmed evidence that someone intentionally set the LaGrave property ablaze, and officials have not classified the incident as arson.
The building’s age and extensive structural damage have also made the investigation difficult. Fire officials said flames may have burned undetected for a significant period before emergency crews received the call.
Christians should demand answers without getting ahead of the evidence.
Church Fires Demand Serious Investigation
The destruction comes as reports of fires at churches and other houses of worship continue drawing attention nationwide. Some church fires in America have resulted in confirmed arson investigations or criminal charges, while authorities have determined other fires were accidental or have left their causes undetermined.
Every suspected attack against a church deserves a thorough investigation.
If investigators discover evidence that someone deliberately targeted this Michigan property because of its Christian connection, authorities should prosecute those responsible to the fullest extent of the law.
Until investigators establish that evidence, however, Americans should not declare this particular fire an intentional attack.
A Biblical Perspective
Church buildings can burn, but the Church itself cannot be extinguished.
Jesus declared:
“Upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18 KJV)
America’s historic churches represent generations of believers who worshipped, prayed, preached the Gospel, raised families, and served their communities.
Those buildings deserve protection, but Christians must remember that our ultimate foundation is not brick, stone, or stained glass. Our foundation is Jesus Christ.

We will not label this Michigan fire an act of arson before investigators establish the facts. But neither should Americans ignore genuine acts of vandalism, arson, or violence directed against Christian congregations when evidence proves they occurred.
America should pay attention.
Pray for the LaGrave congregation, the injured firefighters, investigators searching for answers, and churches across this nation.
And pray for a spiritual awakening that brings America back to God.
